Iceland requires a field station to monitor
reforestation efforts due to its vulnerable
ecosystem. The station would facilitate real-time
data collection, enabling scientists to assess the
impact of tree planting initiatives on soil health,
biodiversity, and climate resilience, crucial for
sustainable ecological restoration on the island.
Drawing from the transience of Iceland’s typology
and culture, the building responds to the
changing of time materially and functionally. The
introduction of a photography lab and archive
aims to reintegrate the culture of planting and
guarding forests back into the Icelandic agenda.
The site looks out onto the fading practice of
whaling in Iceland, which is gradually decreasing.
Instead of letting the area decay, the focus shifts
towards environmental concerns. The existing
buildings from the whaling era are re-purposed
as part of the new plan for the area.

Film: A study of Light

This film documents the cyanotype-making that I developed alongside the project. It aims to show how the passing of time can be captured in light ambiguously to create a blurred image neither factual nor abstract.

Film: Arctic Arbor

The final film output from the project that animates the final renders and puts together the body of research, image making and discussion.
